Organic Carrots: Chantenay Planting Instructions:
Direct sow the seeds 2 to 4 weeks before the last frost. Plant the seeds ¼" deep in full sun and in rows 12" apart. Firm the soil lightly and keep evenly moist. When the seedlings reach 1" high, thin the plants to 2 to 4" apart. Seedlings will have very fine leaves, so it may be helpful to plant radishes along with the carrots to mark the rows. Promote growth by keeping plants well-watered during dry periods. The carrots need about 1"of rainfall each week. Transplanting is not recommended.
Organic Carrots: Chantenay Harvesting Instructions:
To make pulling the carrots easier, soak the harvesting bed first. Twist off the tops while pulling the roots up. Cut the greens off the top of the carrot to about 1/4 to 1/2" above the shoulder after harvest. The carrots can stay in the ground until after the first frost.
