Bill & Pam R.

We first met Pam and her husband Bill on an internet forum dedicated to homesteading, self-reliance and emergency preparedness. We were impressed with how much effort they have put into practicing a self-reliant lifestyle.

After hearing their story we asked if we could feature their family in a brand new Customer Spotlight section of our site and they agreed!

Pam writes:

"My husband Bill and I live in NE Ohio with our six children. We are a homeschooling family trying to live as self-sufficiently as we can on almost two acres of land. We grow as much of our own organic food as possible, because knowing where our food comes from is important to us.

A real wake-up call for us happened when my husband was laid off from his job almost two years ago. Another company bought out his company and cut almost half of the work force without much warning. He was eventually able to find work, but took a massive pay cut just to remain employed. After that happened it became even more important to us to raise more of our own food - after all we have eight mouths to feed!

We've raised chickens, turkeys, and ducks for about eight years now. Last summer we decided to expand and got some milk goats. Our two Nubian goats are pregnant and due to kid soon. Then we will be having our own fresh milk! This will be our first experience with goat babies here on our small homestead. We are getting very excited about it!

This last April we decided to increase our food supply by getting bees. The bees will help pollinate our garden and will provide us with honey that we will use as a sweetener in our home baked goods. I'm also looking forward to being able to just put a big 'ole dollop of it on an apple!

It is very important to our family to know where our food comes from, and to be involved in producing that food. Thankfully my kids love gardening! They love digging in the dirt and planting the seeds! This year we doubled the size of our garden by adding beans, peas, beets, carrots, mangels and acorn squash to the potatoes, cucumbers, and zucchinis that we normally plant.

More Planting Help Arrives
More planting help arrives!

My mom taught me how to can applesauce after I got married and my canning obsession has been growing ever since! My family especially loves home canned strawberry freezer jam, pears, applesauce and spaghetti sauce.

Working with MyPatriotSupply customer service to improve our selection of home-grown vegetables has been absolutely amazing - they have been very quick to respond to any questions and we always receive our seeds very quickly.

If I had one piece of advice to offer someone who is just beginning their journey towards self-reliance...it would be to simply get started! You'll learn as you go, and as with anything in life - experience is the best teacher!

Sincerely, Bill and Pam R. - NE Ohio"

Thanks, Bill & Pam! What a beautiful family you have. We appreciate you sharing a part of your story with us. You've made it clear that it doesn't take a lot of acreage to take control of your family's food supply and preparedness plans.
