Description More Information
Grand Rapids - Leaf Lettuce (1g):
Large green leaves of this lettuce variety are wavy and curled at the edges, and resistant to tip burn. Crisp and tasty, this is a super addition to your salad. Can be grown in cold frames or green houses as well as in the garden.

Detailed planting instructions:
Does best in full sun, planted ½" deep with 1 to 2" between plants. Start the seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before transplanting or direct sow after the last frost of the season. After 7 to 15 days, the seeds should sprout. For full heads, thin the plants to 6" apart as they mature. To prevent the plants from bolting, keep them well watered and cool. Leaf Lettuce thrives in cool seasons. Gardeners in warmer zones should plant in the fall. Taller plants may also help keep the lettuce cool in sunny gardens or warm climates.

Lettuce will be ready to harvest after about 50 days. If you harvest the outer leaves of the plant before the lettuce is mature, you will be able to make multiple harvests. You may also wait until the plant produces a full-sized head of lettuce and harvest it by cutting where the head meets the top of the soil.

Saving Seeds:
Rubbing separates the plumes and chaff from the seeds. When completely dry, shake the flower stems in the bag. Rub the seed heads between your hands to release more seeds. Put the seed through a fine mesh sieve that allows the seeds through but retains the chaff and plumes; this will give relatively clean seed. Winnowing is difficult because seeds and chaff are about the same size and weight. For extra cleaning use reverse screening, with a smaller mesh that retains the seed but lets small pieces or chaff and plume through. The dust produced during cleaning causes irritation to the lungs and eyes. If cleaning large amounts use a mask and goggles or clean outdoors.

Last year my chickens ate all the lettuce so I'm replenishing my supply since I couldn't get them to bolt for harvest

The best seeds we've ever planted April 13, 2016
Reviewer: Beth from Warner, NH United States
Our family began using My Patriot Supply seeds last year and were very impressed with the quality and crop we received. These are high quality seeds that I can feel good about knowing they are GMO free. This spring I planted early and a friend came to help. She brought some organic seeds from a different company to plant as well and within 24 hours the MPS seeds were already sprouting while hers took more than a week to begin popping up. I highly recommend MPS to anyone who is looking to plant a garden!

These seeds arrived in sealed packages. They are just what I order and I am thrilled these packages will last 5 to 7 years. These are all heirloom seeds which I am very much in favor of growing in my garden.

Well too early to plant them yet, but bought from you last year and was very happy. Also seems you are one of the very few places that still have the charleston grey watermelon. We love them.
