Get started with growing your own squash with these step-by-step instructions:
- Conditions – These squash seeds thrive in warm soil and full sun. They are sensitive to frost.
- Soil Preparation – Plant seeds in fertile soil in an area where squash hasn't been grown within the last 2 years.
- Planting – Sow 1 to 2 seeds in hills 4 to 5 feet apart and cover with 1 inch of fine soil. Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.
- Germination – Seedlings emerge in 10 to 14 days.
- Thinning – Thin to 1 plant when seedlings have 2 sets of leaves.
- Care – Given the shallow root system, mulches help maintain soil moisture and temperatures. Keep soil moist, but not saturated, and water well during the growing season.

Harvesting your Early Prolific Straightneck Summer Squash is easy with these tips:
- Harvest Time – Harvest in 46 to 52 days when fruits are small and the skin is shiny.
- Harvesting Frequency – To keep the squash producing, pick all fruit at this stage. Avoid allowing fruit to mature as it may stop the plant from producing.
- Harvesting Method – Gently twist the fruit until it snaps off. Remember to harvest often.
- Storage – Store in plastic bags in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
- Extra Tip – Male squash blossoms are also delicious and sweet. Try dipping them in batter and frying!

I planted my squash seeds on May 10.... 16 of 18 seeds that I planted emerged. One month later on June 10 ,the beautiful blooms appeared. Then,11 days after the blooms, on June 21 , I harvested my first bounty. They have been producing very well. I am eating it almost every other day, giving some away and blanching/freezing it trying to keep up. Very happy -it is delicious
