The Right Preparedness Mindset Matters

As an expert in preparedness, I often get asked for advice. By far, the most common question I get asked is something like:

"If you could recommend I do just one thing to get prepared, what would it be?"

This question is often easier asked than answered. Why? Well, we always preach that everyone's approach to preparedness is different. Everyone has unique challenges, environments, resources, and goals. There's no one-size-fits-all approach to preparedness.

However, there is one thing everyone can do. Actually, it's a mistake you need to avoid.

If you're committed to the preparedness lifestyle, you'll want to hear this piece of advice.

Trust me, it could mean the difference between being comfortable in a crisis and worrying where your next meal might come from. Click the link below so you can avoid this all-too-common mistake.

If you're just getting started with preparedness, it can be easy to get overwhelmed. That's why you need to set goals and stick to them.

This is what we've always recommended: set goals, and then work toward them, step by step, every day. That's how you live the preparedness lifestyle. Just as preparedness is not one-size-fits-all, it's not set-it-and-forget-it either. It takes focus, dedication, and a little work to become a habit. But when you realize what's at stake is your health and safety, it all pays off.

OK, so say you're ready to set a preparedness goal or two. Great! But before you set those goals, make sure you avoid this one mistake:

Underestimating Your Emergency Needs

This mistake is far more common than it needs to be. I'll explain 3 common ways people underestimate in setting their preparedness goals, so you can plan to avoid them.

  1. You're Never Alone

The media stereotype is that "preppers" are all living alone off in the woods somewhere. We all know that, for the majority of us, this isn't true. But a lot of folks underestimate who they're really preparing for.

You may count the people in your home right now and start there. But what if an emergency strikes with friends in town (or even worse - in-laws)? Will you have enough? Not if you don't plan for it.

What if your unprepared neighbors come knocking at your door? Will you have to turn them away out of necessity? Or will you be the neighborhood hero?

Now, the majority of our emergency food supplies are designed for one adult person, but they're intended to provide emergency sustenance to whoever needs it in your situation.

That's why, for anyone who's committed to the preparedness lifestyle, we always recommend starting with our best-selling 3-Month Supply. Have a look at the 3-Month Supply here.

  2. You Can Never Be Over-Prepared

When people ask me or one of our preparedness experts on the phone how much emergency food they need, we try to boil it down to make it easy for them. Basically, whatever amount you had in your head, triple it.

The federal government recommends that all Americans have 3 days of food, water, and supplies per person. Really? We all know that this is not enough, not for true emergencies.

When you're preparing for the unexpected, it's always better to have too much food than not enough. You might burn more calories if you have to travel by foot to safety. You might accidentally lose some of your food. Hey, spills and other mistakes happen to the best of us. As mentioned above, you might have unexpected mouths to feed with visitors.

That's why we ensure that all of our emergency food leads the industry in storage shelf life. Your food will last unopened for up to 25 years. So if you don't use all of it in one emergency situation, just store it away for the next one. (But don't forget to restock.)

The truth is, there's no such thing as being over-prepared. If you really want to embrace the preparedness mindset - take that principle to heart.

  3. Finally, Life Happens

One thing a lot of folks underestimate about preparedness is the wide range of things we're really preparing for. Yes, we're all concerned about terrorist attacks, natural disasters, disease, long-term power loss and economic collapse. These are real threats that have real consequences.

But a lot of emergencies are just a natural part of everyday life. You could lose your job. A loved one could become seriously ill and require extensive care. One of our customers was swindled of their retirement by a disreputable advisor.

These things happen. And when they do, it's always good to have a backup plan. If you have an emergency supply of food, you won't have to worry about where your next meal is coming from. You're prepared for whatever life brings your way.

Ultimately, if you pay attention to these things, you can avoid underestimating your preparedness needs.
