Heirloom Waltham 29 Broccoli Planting Instructions
- Broccoli prefers full sun and takes about 75 days between planting and harvest.
- 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost, sow seeds in rows 2 inches apart and cover with 1/4 inch of soil.
- If transplanting, sow the seeds 8 weeks before moving outdoors. When seedlings have at least 3 pairs of leaves, it's time to transplant. Harden off the plants first by moving them to a sheltered place outside for a week before planting. Cover or bring inside if there is danger of frost.
- Transplant seedlings 18 inches apart, in rows 2 feet apart, burying so that the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
- Water thoroughly and use a light mulch to conserve water and suppress weeds.
Heirloom Waltham 29 Broccoli Harvesting Instructions
For peak quality, harvest when the buds on the head are firm and tight.
Cut off the central head along with 6 inches of the stem. If the buds start to separate and reveal the yellow petals inside, harvest the broccoli immediately.
Broccoli can be frozen for future use.
