Cyclospora outbreak sickens almost 150 people

A Cyclospora outbreak has sickened at least 145 people across 17 states, and health officials have not yet identified the source. The illnesses were acquired in the U.S., with patients ranging from 5 to 86 years old and 20 people hospitalized. Public health officials are investigating several clusters in multiple states, and the true number of illnesses may be higher since some people recover without testing. Cyclospora can spread through contaminated food or water, and previous U.S. outbreaks have been linked to fresh produce like basil, cilantro, lettuce, raspberries, and snow peas.

Why This Matters:
Foodborne outbreaks can spread before the source is clear, leaving families unsure which products may be affected. When contamination is tied to food or water, the impact can move quickly across states and show up in everyday grocery items. For households, it is another reminder that food safety issues can hit without much warning, and having dependable backup food in place helps families stay prepared when recalls, outbreaks, or supply concerns create uncertainty.
