Federal security agencies are warning that Iranian-affiliated cyber actors are targeting U.S. critical infrastructure as tensions continue to rise. According to a joint advisory, the activity is focused on operational technology devices tied to water, wastewater, and energy systems, including programmable logic controllers used in industrial automation. The agencies said the threat actors have been using overseas-based IP addresses to access internet-connected industrial computers, extract project files, and alter data displays. Municipalities and operators in the water and energy sectors are being urged to review whether their systems have been compromised and to apply immediate security measures.
