Highest-Level Recall Issued for Thousands of Pounds of Bacon, USDA Urges People ‘Not to Consume’ It

More than 12,000 pounds of bacon have been recalled after the products entered the U.S. without the required USDA import reinspection. The recall involves Maple Leaf Foods’ not-ready-to-eat smoked bacon products imported from Canada and sold under the Royale and Top Valu brands. The affected bacon was distributed to Grocery Outlet distributors and retailers in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Federal officials classified the recall as the highest risk level and are urging people not to eat the affected products, though no confirmed illnesses or injuries had been reported at the time of the recall.

Why This Matters:
Food safety concerns are not limited to contamination outbreaks. Sometimes the risk comes from a breakdown in the inspection process, which means products can reach stores before the usual safeguards are completed. For households, it is another reminder that everyday grocery items can become uncertain quickly, and having dependable backup food in place helps reduce reliance on the store when recalls, inspection failures, or contamination concerns create uncertainty.
