Lake Powell is nearing critically low elevation levels as long-term drought and heavy water demand continue to strain the Colorado River system. The reservoir could reach “dead pool” at 3,370 feet, when water can no longer flow past Glen Canyon Dam by gravity. If that happens, water could become trapped at the bottom of the canyon, creating major concerns for communities in Arizona, California, Nevada, and other areas that depend on the Colorado River system.
Why This Matters:
Lake Powell is more than a reservoir. It helps support water supply, hydropower, agriculture, and communities across the Southwest. When levels fall this low, the concern is not just drought on paper. It can mean weaker power generation, harder water decisions, higher costs, and more pressure on the systems families rely on every day. For households, it is another reminder that water and power security are connected, and preparedness matters before those systems are pushed past their limits.
