Thousands of Blueberries Recalled, Classified at FDA’s Highest Warning Level for Potential E. Coli Contamination

The FDA has classified Publix’s recall of GreenWise frozen blueberries and mixed berries at its highest risk level over possible E. coli contamination. The Class I designation means there is a reasonable probability that eating or being exposed to the recalled product could cause serious health consequences or death. The recall includes GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries sold at Publix stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Health officials have linked the outbreak to 12 illnesses and four hospitalizations, and some recalled frozen products may stay in home freezers well into 2028 if shoppers do not check for them.

Why This Matters:
Frozen food recalls can linger longer than fresh food recalls because the product may stay tucked away in a freezer for months or even years. That makes it easier for families to miss a warning until the product is used in a smoothie, dessert, breakfast, or meal prep. When a freezer staple is tied to the FDA’s highest-risk recall level, it is a reminder that stored food still needs to be checked, rotated, and trusted. For households, shelf-stable food storage offers a more dependable layer of backup when grocery items become unsafe or uncertain. Freeze-dried blueberries give families a long-term fruit option that does not depend on the grocery freezer.
