Planting Instructions

Watermelon requires warm soil, space to spread, and consistent care:

  • Planting Time: Sow seeds after the last frost in warm, fertile soil

  • Spacing: Plant in hills spaced about 3 feet apart
  • Seed Groups: Plant 4–6 seeds per hill, then thin to 2–3 strongest plants

Harvesting Instructions

Knowing when to harvest is key to getting the best flavor:

  • Ripeness Indicator: Tendrils near the fruit turn brown and dry
  • Ground Spot: The underside develops a creamy yellow color
  • Harvest Method: Cut fruit from the vine using sharp shears
  • Storage: Whole melons can be refrigerated for 1–2 weeks; cut fruit should be wrapped and used within a few days

Saving Seeds

Saving seeds from watermelon is straightforward when fruit is fully mature.

Select a fully ripe melon and remove seeds from the flesh. Rinse thoroughly to remove pulp, then allow seeds to dry completely before storing.

Because watermelons can cross-pollinate with other varieties, isolate plants if you plan to save seeds for consistent results in future growing seasons.
