About Proposition 65

California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65) requires businesses to provide warnings when their products may expose consumers to one or more of over 900 chemicals identified by the State of California as causing cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

At My Patriot Supply, we believe preparedness starts with knowing the facts—not just seeing a warning label. That's why we want to explain what Proposition 65 means and why you may see this notice on many everyday foods and household products.

A Proposition 65 warning does not necessarily mean that a product is unsafe. Rather, it indicates that one or more listed chemicals may exceed the strict safety threshold set under California law.

The threshold set by California law is calculated by determining the "no observable effect level." The "no observable effect level" identifies the level of exposure that has been shown to not pose any harm to humans or animals and divides this by 1,000. Businesses are required to provide a warning if exposure exceeds 1/1000th of the "no observable effect level," which is intended to provide an ample margin of safety. As a result, Proposition 65 warnings appear on many common foods, beverages, spices, vegetables, dietary supplements, and consumer products sold throughout California.

We provide this warning because California law requires it under certain circumstances. We also believe our customers deserve clear, honest information so they can make informed decisions with confidence.

Many naturally occurring foods contain trace amounts of substances listed under Proposition 65 simply because they are present in soil, water, or the natural environment. In other cases, trace amounts may result from growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, or preparation.

Our commitment has always been to source quality ingredients, manufacture responsibly, and provide products that meet applicable food safety standards—not simply to meet the minimum legal requirements.

Common Proposition 65 Chemicals Found in Foods and Food Packaging

Lead

Lead is a naturally occurring metal that can also be present in the environment due to historical industrial activity. Trace amounts may be found in certain foods, dietary supplements, herbs, spices, and agricultural products because of naturally occurring soil content or environmental contamination. According to the FDA, it is not possible to completely prevent lead from entering the food supply. Prop 65 sets the daily threshold for lead to 0.5 micrograms.  A single serving of fresh fruits or vegetables have been found to contain lead within a range of 1.0 to 5.0 mcg.

Cadmium

Cadmium is a naturally occurring metal found in soil. Certain vegetables, grains, shellfish, and organ meats may contain trace amounts because plants and animals can absorb cadmium from their environment.  The FDA Total Diet Study found that cadmium was detected in 93% of vegetable samples.  Prop 65 sets the daily threshold for cadmium to 4.1 micrograms.  A single serving of leafy greens have been found to contain cadmium within a range of 5.0 to 10.0 mcg.
