Blood red map exposes 17 states at risk of blackout as power emergency launched

A dangerous heat wave is putting major pressure on the power grid across parts of 17 states. The U.S. Department of Energy issued an emergency order allowing the Southwest Power Pool to use backup power sources as extreme heat drives up electricity demand. The order covers parts of Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. Officials said the action is meant to help reduce the risk of blackouts as millions of Americans face dangerous heat and heavy air-conditioning demand.

Why This Matters:
Extreme heat can turn into a power emergency when millions of households need electricity at the same time. When the grid is stretched thin, outages can threaten air conditioning, refrigeration, communication, medical devices, and other daily essentials families depend on. For households, it is another reminder that backup power matters before high demand, severe weather, or grid strain turns into a blackout.
