Cyclospora cases surge to nearly 600 in Michigan

Cyclospora cases have surged in Michigan, where state health officials have reported 572 cases as of July 4, centered around a Monroe County cluster. That number is separate from the CDC’s latest national count, which listed 145 domestically acquired cases across 17 states through June 16, meaning the national total could rise sharply once newer state data is included. Health officials are still investigating the source, but past Cyclospora outbreaks have often been linked to raw fresh produce that does not go through a cooking step, such as herbs, berries, salad mixes, and vegetable trays.

Why This Matters:
Foodborne outbreaks can spread before families know which product is causing the problem. When contamination is tied to raw produce, washing may not be enough to remove the risk, and recalls or warnings can come after people are already sick. For households, it is another reminder that dependable backup food matters when outbreaks, recalls, or supply concerns make everyday grocery items harder to trust.
