The regional grid operator for 14 central U.S. states warned that it could order rolling blackouts as extreme electricity demand pushed the power system close to a shortfall. The Southwest Power Pool issued the warning Monday evening as high heat drove record demand across its territory. Rolling blackouts would be used as a last resort to protect the larger grid if electricity supply could not keep up with demand.
Why This Matters:
Rolling blackout warnings show how quickly extreme heat can turn into a power reliability problem. For households, it is another reminder that backup power is no longer a luxury. It is becoming a necessity when the systems families rely on are pushed close to the edge.
