Kroger, Walmart, Trader Joe’s products recalled over Salmonella outbreak

A Salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeño peppers has expanded into a wide recall affecting prepared foods sold at major retailers including Kroger, Walmart, Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Hannaford, and Stop & Shop. Taylor Farms recalled dips, salsas, guacamole, sandwiches, salads, and other prepared foods made with the affected peppers after Coast Citrus Distributors recalled fresh jalapeños tied to possible Salmonella contamination. Federal health officials have linked the outbreak to 345 illnesses across 27 states, including 36 hospitalizations and no reported deaths. The recalled products were distributed across 26 states and include “Best If Used By” dates through August 16.

Why This Matters:
A single contaminated ingredient can spread through far more than one product or one store. In this case, jalapeños ended up in dips, salsas, sandwiches, salads, and prepared meals sold under multiple grocery names, making the recall harder for shoppers to spot quickly. For households, it is a reminder that food risk is not always obvious from the front of the package. Shelf-stable meals at home give families another option when fresh or prepared grocery items are suddenly pulled from stores.
