Meta’s massive AI data center project in Cheyenne, Wyoming, has been linked to contamination in the city’s wastewater system. City officials say a Meta contractor discharged wastewater containing Cupriavidus gilardii, a rare bacterium, during fill-and-flush operations used to clean and test the facility’s cooling system. The contamination affected Cheyenne’s reclaimed water system used for irrigation, not the public drinking water supply, but it still forced months of cleanup and led the city to suspend wastewater acceptance from data center operations.
Why This Matters:
AI data centers are putting new pressure on local infrastructure, and this shows the risks go beyond electricity and water demand. When industrial wastewater contaminates a city system, even without reaching drinking water, communities can be left dealing with cleanup, service disruptions, regulatory changes, and unanswered questions about long-term impact. For households, it is another reminder that rapid infrastructure growth can create problems communities may not fully see coming.
