Outbreak Investigation of Salmonella: Eggs (July 2026)

The FDA and CDC are investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked in part to recalled shell eggs from Midwest Poultry Services. At least 98 people across 17 states have been sickened, with 26 hospitalizations and no deaths reported. The recalled eggs include white shell eggs and brown cage-free shell eggs sold under brands including Country Morning, Cal-Maine Sunups, Brookshire’s, Simple Truth, and Kroger. Officials are urging consumers, restaurants, and retailers not to eat, sell, or serve the recalled eggs and to clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers the eggs may have touched.

Why This Matters:
Eggs are one of the most common foods in American kitchens, which makes a recall like this especially concerning. They are used for breakfast, baking, meal prep, restaurants, and everyday family meals, meaning contaminated products can move through homes and foodservice quickly before people realize there is a problem. For households, it is another reminder that everyday grocery items can become uncertain quickly, and having dependable backup food in place helps reduce reliance on the store when recalls, outbreaks, or contamination concerns create uncertainty.
