As food companies rush to replace artificial ingredients and dyes with natural alternatives, experts are warning that the shift is opening the door to more food fraud. Demand for natural colors is rising fast as states consider additive bans and companies respond to consumer pressure, but suppliers are struggling to keep up. That is creating more opportunity for economic adulteration, including synthetic and natural colors being mixed together, dyes being added to spices, and olive oil being diluted with cheaper seed oils.
Why This Matters:
This goes straight to trust in the food supply. When companies move fast to meet label demands but supply cannot keep up, it creates room for fraud, substitution, and ingredients that are not what they claim to be. Clean labels do not mean much if the supply chain behind them is compromised. That is one more reason not to put blind trust in the system and to be more intentional about what your household depends on.
