Scientists are raising concern over an emerging eye disease linked to a virus commonly found in shrimp and other seafood. The condition causes inflammation and dangerously high pressure inside the eye, and in at least one reported case it led to irreversible blindness. Researchers in China studied 70 patients diagnosed between 2022 and 2025 and found that many had either handled seafood without protection or eaten raw fish. The virus, known as covert mortality nodavirus, was detected in eye tissue removed during surgery, and researchers say this appears to be the first known case of a seafood-linked virus being tied to a human eye disease.
