Trump declares food supply emergency, suspends tariffs on key fertilizer imports

President Trump has declared an emergency aimed at protecting the U.S. food supply and temporarily suspended certain duties on phosphate fertilizer imported from Morocco. The move is meant to help farmers access a key fertilizer during the planting and growing season, after conflict and trade actions disrupted global fertilizer supply chains. The White House said U.S. phosphate fertilizer production is not currently enough to support domestic agricultural food production after accounting for exports, and expanding domestic fertilizer manufacturing will take time.

Why This Matters:
Fertilizer is one of the foundations of food production. When farmers cannot get enough of it, or when prices rise too high, the effects can carry through planting, yields, harvests, and eventually grocery prices. For households, this is another reminder that food supply pressure often starts long before products reach the shelf. Having long-term food storage in place gives families a backup when farming costs, global conflict, or supply chain disruptions create uncertainty around everyday food.
