Two scientists at a U.S. government lab have been charged with bringing vials of deactivated mpox virus into the country from Africa without permission and lying to investigators at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. According to authorities, Vincent Munster and Claude Kwe work at Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Montana and had recently traveled from the Republic of Congo, where an mpox outbreak had been linked to more than 2,000 deaths before being declared over in April. The FBI said tests later showed they were carrying vials of deactivated mpox, but they had not declared the materials or obtained the required authorization.
Why This Matters:
Biological materials are tightly controlled for a reason. Even when a virus is described as deactivated, failures in permission, documentation, and honesty can raise serious questions about lab safety, public trust, and how dangerous materials are handled. For households, this is another reminder that health and safety risks are not always easy to see coming, and basic preparedness helps families stay ready when public health concerns or emergency responses create uncertainty.
