Parasite outbreak linked to produce sickens hundreds across 31 states

A parasitic illness linked to contaminated food is spreading across the U.S., with California now among the states reporting cases. The CDC says hundreds of domestically acquired Cyclospora cases have been confirmed since May, with more cases still under review. Cyclospora can spread through food or water contaminated with feces, and past outbreaks have been linked to fresh produce like herbs, berries, salad mixes, lettuce, and snap peas. Health officials have not yet identified one clear source, which makes the outbreak harder for families to track.

Why This Matters:
Foodborne outbreaks are harder to manage when the source is still unknown. When contamination may involve fresh produce, families can be left questioning everyday grocery items that normally feel safe. Having dependable backup food in place helps reduce reliance on store-bought items when outbreaks, recalls, or food safety concerns create uncertainty.
