Almost 1 in 5 Americans may be drinking water with elevated nitrate levels linked to cancer and birth defects. A new analysis found that more than 62.1 million people were served by community water systems that tested at or above 3 milligrams per liter for nitrate between 2021 and 2023, a level regulators use as a sign of human-caused contamination. The report says nitrate pollution is driven mainly by fertilizer, manure, and wastewater, and warns that climate change is making the problem worse by increasing runoff and soil erosion that carry those contaminants into drinking water.
Why This Matters:
Clean water is one of the basics people depend on without thinking twice. But when contamination reaches this many households, it shows how vulnerable that trust can be. Rising nitrate levels mean more health concerns, more treatment costs, and more pressure on systems families already rely on every day. That is one more reason not to put blind trust in the system and to be more intentional about what your household depends on.
