Frequently Asked Questions

Preparedness & Getting Started

I'm new to preparedness. Where should I start?

Preparedness starts with covering the essentials your household depends on when normal systems are disrupted. Focus first on food, water, power, and heating & cooking.

From there, build based on your household size, storage space, budget, and the situations you want to be ready for. Our Getting Started page lays out the main categories and helps you choose the right next step.

What should I have on hand for the first 72 hours of an emergency?

For the first 72 hours of an emergency, focus on the basics your household would need during a short-term disruption like a storm, power outage, winter weather event, boil water notice, road closure, or evacuation warning. That includes emergency food, clean water or water filtration, a way to cook without power, backup lighting or power, first aid supplies, medications, hygiene items, important documents, and supplies for kids, pets, or elderly family members.

Start with the Survival Starter Pack for food, water filtration, backup power, solar charging, and off-grid cooking tools in one small-scale emergency setup. You can also visit our First 72 Hours page for a step-by-step look at what to prioritize first.

How much emergency food and water should I keep at home?

Start with enough emergency food and water for at least 72 hours, then build from there based on your household size, location, and preparedness goals. A three-day supply can help you get through short-term disruptions like storms, power outages, winter weather, road closures, or boil water notices.

From there, continue building your supply over time. Many families work toward one week, then 2–4 weeks, then longer-term food security as their budget and storage space allow. Our Preparedness Ladder is a simple way to see what each stage looks like and choose the next step for your household.

How do I build an emergency supply over time?

Start small and build one layer at a time. You do not need to buy everything at once. Begin with enough food and water for the first 72 hours, then work toward one week, 2–4 weeks, three months, and longer-term food security as your budget, space, and household needs allow.

Focus first on the essentials: emergency food, water filtration or storage, backup power, cooking supplies, first aid, and basic evacuation gear. From there, add more variety, protein, fruits and vegetables, and the items your family will actually use.

Use our Build Your Preparedness Ladder page to see what each stage of preparedness looks like and choose the next step for your household.

What should I keep in my car for emergencies?

Keep a small emergency kit in your vehicle in case you get stuck, stranded, delayed, or need to leave home quickly. Start with shelf-stable food, water, a water filter, flashlight or lantern, backup phone charger, first aid supplies, jumper cables, basic tools, a blanket, extra clothing, gloves, hygiene items, and any medications your household may need.

The Survival Car Kit is a simple way to cover many of these basics in one vehicle-ready kit, with emergency supplies designed to help you stay prepared on the road. It is also smart to add weather-specific items like hand warmers, an ice scraper, rain gear, or extra water depending on your location and season. Check your car kit a few times a year so food, water, batteries, and personal items stay ready when you need them.

How do I prepare for an evacuation?

Prepare ahead of time so you can leave quickly if an evacuation warning is issued. Know where you would go, how you would get there, and how your household would communicate if you were separated. Keep a go-bag ready with emergency food, water or water filtration, first aid supplies, medications, hygiene items, backup power, a flashlight, important documents, cash, and supplies for kids, pets, or elderly family members.

You can use our Rapid Evacuation Preparedness page to build a practical plan before an emergency is at your door, including what to pack, what mistakes to avoid, and how to return home safely.

How many people are the kits built for?

Most emergency food kits are built for one person for the amount of time listed on the product, based on the daily calories included in that kit. For example, a 4-week kit is designed to feed one person for 28 days, or two people for about 14 days.

If you are preparing for multiple people, multiply the kit size by your household. A family of four would need four times the food to cover the same amount of time. My Patriot Supply also offers select family-sized options, like Family Starter Packs for 2, 4, or 6 people.

Emergency Food

How long does emergency food last?

Most My Patriot Supply emergency food is designed to last up to 25 years when stored properly. Keep it in a cool, dry, dark place, ideally away from extreme heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.

Meals are sealed in heavy-duty pouches with oxygen absorbers to help protect freshness and shelf life. As long as the individual pouches remain sealed, they keep their full shelf life even after the storage bucket has been opened. Once a pouch is opened, the food can stay fresh for up to 1 year when properly resealed and stored.

How should I store my emergency food?

Store your emergency food in a cool, dry, dark place, ideally between 55°F and 70°F. A pantry, closet, basement, or temperature-controlled storage area is usually best. Avoid garages, sheds, attics, or anywhere temperatures can swing dramatically.

Keep pouches and cans sealed until you are ready to use them. Once opened, reseal tightly or transfer unused food to an airtight container, keep it away from moisture, and use it within the recommended timeframe. Proper storage helps protect shelf life, flavor, and quality so your food is ready when you need it.

How much emergency food does my family need?

Start with at least a 72-hour emergency food supply for each person in your household, then build from there. A three-day supply can help cover short-term disruptions like storms, power outages, road closures, or boil water notices. From there, many families work toward one week, 2–4 weeks, three months, and longer-term reserves over time.

When choosing a kit, look at the number of people in your household, the number of days you want to cover, and the calories included per day. For example, My Patriot Supply food kits are designed to feed one person for the time listed, so a family of four would need four times the food to cover the same period. Our Preparedness Ladder can help you choose the right next step based on your household, budget, and storage space.

How many calories are included in each food kit?

Calories vary by kit, so we recommend checking the product page for the exact calorie count before ordering. Many My Patriot Supply emergency food kits are built around 2,000+ calories per day, while select MEGA food and protein kits include higher daily calorie counts.

When comparing kits, look at both the total calories and the calories per day so you can choose the right supply for your household. For example, the 4-Week Emergency Food Supply lists 2,000+ calories per day and 56,140 total calories.

Do you offer options for specialty diets, like gluten-free or vegetarian?

Yes. My Patriot Supply offers emergency food options for a variety of dietary needs and preferences, including gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, lower sodium, lower sugar, lower carb, and soy-free options. You can shop by special diet to find foods that better fit your household’s needs.

Because ingredients and dietary needs can vary by product, always review the product page, ingredient list, and nutrition facts before ordering, especially if you have a food allergy or strict dietary requirement.

What do I need to prepare emergency food meals?

Most emergency food meals require clean water and a way to heat it. In many cases, you’ll add hot water directly to the meal, let it sit, and then serve. Some meals may require simmering or basic cookware, so always check the preparation instructions on the pouch or product page before using.

For emergencies, it’s smart to keep more than just food on hand. Make sure you also have stored water or a water filter, an off-grid cooking option, fuel, matches or a lighter, cookware, utensils, and a safe way to prepare meals if the power is out.

Does your food taste good?

Yes. We’re proud of the taste and quality of our emergency food. Our meals are made in U.S. facilities inspected and audited by the USDA and manufactured according to FDA regulations.

Our recipes are created to provide a dependable emergency food supply without giving up the familiar flavors your family enjoys every day. Because food stored for an emergency should still be food your family will want to eat.

If you’re new to My Patriot Supply, we recommend starting with the 72-Hour Food Kit. It’s a simple way to sample some of the meals, experience the quality for yourself, and feel confident about the food you’re storing for your household.

Water Filtration

How much water will I need?

A good starting point is at least one gallon of water per person, per day for drinking and basic hygiene. For a 72-hour emergency, that means a minimum of 3 gallons per person. A family of four should start with at least 12 gallons.

You may need more if you live in a hot climate, have pets, are caring for children or elderly family members, or plan to prepare emergency food meals that require water. For longer disruptions, it is smart to have both stored water and a way to filter or treat additional water if your regular supply is interrupted.

A strong water plan includes three parts: storage, treatment, and filtration. Use our Water Security Guide to learn how to layer each part into a practical plan for short-term disruptions and longer emergencies.

What water filtration system should I get?

The right water filtration system depends on how and where you plan to use it. For home preparedness, start with the Alexapure Pro for reliable countertop water filtration. If you want something smaller for everyday use, the Alexapure Pitcher is a simple option for your kitchen or fridge.

For go-bags, car kits, camping, or evacuation supplies, Aquamira personal water filters are a better fit because they are lightweight and easy to carry. A strong water plan may also include stored water and water treatment options, so you are not relying on one solution alone.

For help choosing the right setup, visit our Water Security Guide to learn how to build a layered plan with water storage, treatment, and filtration.

What should I know about water filtration before I make a purchase?

All of our water filters are designed to reduce a wide range of contaminants, so the biggest question is how you plan to use them. For home preparedness, the Alexapure Pro is a strong countertop option that can help provide clean water for your household without electricity or plumbing. For car kits, go-bags, camping, or evacuation supplies, Aquamira personal filters are more portable and easier to carry.

Many families choose to keep both on hand. An Alexapure system gives you a dependable home filtration option, while Aquamira filters give you a backup solution when you are away from home or need to travel quickly. During an emergency, having more than one way to filter water can make your plan much stronger.

What’s the difference between water filtration, water treatment, and water storage? Which one should I go with?

Water storage means keeping water on hand before you need it. Stored water can help during emergencies like water shutoffs, boil water notices, storms, outages, or situations where your regular water supply becomes unsafe or unavailable.

Water filtration helps reduce contaminants from water. For home use, the Alexapure Pro is a strong option for household filtration. For go-bags, car kits, camping, or evacuation supplies, Aquamira personal filters are more portable and easy to carry.

Water treatment adds another layer of protection, especially for stored water that has been sitting for a long time or water that may need extra care during an emergency. Treatment options like drops or tablets are easy to store and can be an important part of your backup plan.

For the strongest setup, we recommend having all three: stored water for immediate access, filtration for ongoing backup, and treatment as an added emergency layer. You can learn more in our Water Security Guide.

What’s the difference between Alexapure water filters and Aquamira personal water filters?

Alexapure water filters are best for home use and household preparedness. The Alexapure Pro is a countertop, gravity-powered system that does not require electricity or plumbing, making it a strong option for everyday use, power outages, boil water notices, and longer emergencies at home. It is designed to reduce 220+ contaminants commonly found in drinking water.

Aquamira personal water filters are built for portability. They are better for go-bags, car kits, camping, hiking, evacuation supplies, or situations where you may need clean water away from home. They are lightweight, easy to carry, and useful when space matters.

Many households keep both. Alexapure for home filtration and Aquamira for portable emergency backup.

What is the difference between filtration and purification?

Filtration uses a physical filter to help reduce contaminants from water. Depending on the filter, this can include things like sediment, chemicals, heavy metals, bacteria, cysts, and other unwanted contaminants.

Purification is a broader term that usually refers to making water safer to drink by reducing, removing, or inactivating harmful contaminants, especially bacteria, viruses, and microorganisms. Purification can happen through filtration, treatment drops, tablets, boiling, UV, or a combination of methods.

For emergencies, the strongest water plan usually includes more than one option. A home filtration system like the Alexapure Pro can support your household day to day or during longer disruptions, while portable filters and treatment options can help when you are away from home, under a boil water notice, or dealing with an unsafe water supply.

What contaminants do Alexapure and Aquamira filters reduce?

Alexapure filters are designed for broad household water filtration. The Alexapure Pro is extensively tested on 220+ contaminants that can affect your drinking water, including bacteria, cysts, PFAS “forever chemicals,” heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, particulates, microplastics, chlorine, chloramine, pesticides, and herbicides.

Aquamira personal filters are built for portable filtration when you are away from home, traveling, camping, or preparing for an evacuation. Depending on the product, Aquamira filters can help reduce bacteria, parasites, protozoa, and improve taste and odor.

Both are useful in an emergency. Alexapure is a strong home filtration option, while Aquamira gives you a portable backup when clean water is not available on the go.

Do Alexapure water filters require electricity or plumbing?

No. Alexapure water filters are designed to work without electricity or plumbing, making them easy to use at home and helpful during outages, boil water notices, or other water emergencies.

The Alexapure Pro uses gravity-fed filtration, so you simply add water to the upper chamber and let the system filter it into the lower chamber. There is no installation, wiring, or connection to your sink required. The Alexapure Pitcher is also simple to use and does not require electricity or plumbing.

How much water can your filters clean before they need to be replaced?

Filter life depends on the product. The Alexapure Pro filter has a verified capacity of up to 200 gallons per filter, depending on water quality. The Alexapure Pitcher replacement filters are designed for up to 100 gallons. For portable filtration, the Aquamira G2O filter can filter up to 120 gallons, while the Aquamira Survival Straw can filter up to 300 gallons.

Replace your filter when it reaches its listed capacity or when water flow slows noticeably. For emergencies, it is smart to keep replacement filters on hand so your water plan does not stop after one filter is used.

How do I take care of my water filtration systems?

Take care of your water filtration system by keeping it clean, dry when stored, and ready with replacement filters. For the Alexapure Pro, rinse the chambers as needed and lightly clean the filter exterior if mineral buildup appears. Use clean water only and avoid soap on the filter.

For Aquamira personal filters, shake out excess water after use, replace the protective cap, and store the filter in a cool, dry place. Do not let portable filters freeze, and replace them once they reach their listed capacity or if the flow rate noticeably decreases.

It is also smart to keep replacement filters on hand so your water plan stays ready during outages, boil water notices, water shutoffs, or other emergencies.

Do the Alexapure Pro filters have a shelf life?

Unopened Alexapure Pro filters can last indefinitely when they remain sealed and are stored properly. Each filter is packaged with a protective suspension fluid that helps keep it from drying out while stored.

Once a filter has been opened, it needs to stay hydrated. If you are not using your Alexapure Pro for several days, store the filter with a small amount of distilled water in the refrigerator and make sure it does not freeze. This helps protect the filter and keeps it ready for future use.

How do I store my Alexapure pro Filters?

If your Alexapure Pro filter is unopened, keep it sealed in its original packaging and store it in a clean, temperature-controlled place. For best results, store replacement filters above 35°F and avoid extreme temperatures. Unopened filters are packaged with protective suspension fluid to help keep them from drying out while stored.

Once a filter has been opened or used, it needs to stay hydrated. If you are not using your Alexapure Pro for more than several days, seal the filter in a plastic bag or container with filtered or distilled water and place it in the refrigerator where it will not freeze. Never let the filter dry out completely, since that can affect performance.

Power & Solar Generators

Which solar generator is right for my household?

The right solar generator depends on what you want to keep powered during an outage. If you want a smaller backup option for phones, tablets, laptops, lights, or other essential devices, the Grid Doctor 300 is a good place to start. If you want a stronger home backup option for larger needs like a refrigerator, freezer, medical device, or multiple essentials, the Grid Doctor 3300 is the better fit.

My Patriot Supply carries Grid Doctor systems, solar panels, power banks, expansion battery kits, extension cords, and Faraday accessories so you can build a setup that fits your home and emergency plan.

Do I need extra expansion batteries?

Extra expansion batteries are not required to use a compatible Grid Doctor solar generator, but they can be a smart upgrade if you want longer runtime during an outage. Your solar generator determines what you can power. Expansion batteries help determine how long you can keep those items running.

For example, the 3300XP Expansion Battery is made for the Grid Doctor 3300. Each battery adds 2,048Wh of additional storage, and the system can stack up to 7 expansion batteries for longer backup power. Expansion batteries are especially useful if you want to run essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, medical device, or other important appliances for a longer period of time.

When do I need extra panels?

Extra solar panels are helpful when you want to recharge your Grid Doctor system faster during daylight hours, especially during longer outages, cloudy conditions, or heavier power use. If you are powering larger essentials or using your generator day after day, extra panels can help you collect more solar energy while the sun is available.

If you have a Grid Doctor 3300, use compatible 200W Grid Doctor solar panels to expand your solar charging setup. If you have a Grid Doctor 300, use the compatible 100W Grid Doctor solar panel. The Grid Doctor 300 includes one 100W panel and can support one additional 100W panel for expanded solar charging.

Extra panels are not always necessary, but they are a smart upgrade if you want more off-grid charging power and less dependence on wall charging.

The best solar panel match depends on which Grid Doctor system you have. The Grid Doctor 3300 is compatible with 200W Grid Doctor solar panels, while the Grid Doctor 300 is compatible with 100W Grid Doctor solar panels.

Can solar generators be used indoors?

Yes. Grid Doctor solar generators can be used indoors because they do not burn gas, do not produce exhaust, and do not create carbon monoxide like traditional gas generators.

That makes them a good option for indoor backup power during outages, storms, winter weather, or other emergencies. Keep the unit in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from heat sources or moisture, and always follow the product instructions for safe charging and use.

What accessories do I need for my solar generator setup?

The right accessories depend on your Grid Doctor system and how much backup power you want to have available. Many customers start with compatible solar panels so they can recharge their system using the sun during an outage. For longer runtime, expansion batteries can help keep essential devices and appliances powered longer.

You may also want extension cords or charging cables to make your setup easier to use, especially if your solar panels need to be placed outside while your generator stays safely indoors. For added protection, Faraday bags can help shield smaller electronics and backup power gear when stored.

A good setup usually includes the generator, compatible solar panels, the right charging cables or cords, and any expansion batteries or protective storage options that fit your household’s needs.

Will my panels on my house power my Grid Doctor?

In most cases, your rooftop solar panels will not plug directly into your Grid Doctor. Home solar systems are usually wired through your house, inverter, electrical panel, or battery backup system, while Grid Doctor systems are designed to charge through a wall outlet, car adapter, or compatible Grid Doctor solar panels.

If your home solar setup powers a working wall outlet, you may be able to charge your Grid Doctor from that outlet. But direct connection from rooftop panels should only be handled by a qualified electrician, because compatibility, wiring, voltage, and safety requirements matter. For the simplest off-grid setup, use compatible Grid Doctor solar panels. The Grid Doctor 3300 supports up to five 200W panels for up to 1,000W of solar input.

How long will it take to charge each Generator?

Charging time depends on the Grid Doctor model, the charging method, and solar conditions if you are charging with panels.

The Grid Doctor 300 can recharge from a wall outlet, solar panel, or car adapter. On AC power, it can go from 0 to 100% in about 4 hours. Solar charging will vary based on sunlight, panel placement, weather, and whether you are using one or two compatible 100W panels.

The Grid Doctor 3300 can charge from a wall outlet, vehicle adapter, or compatible solar panels. It has a 1,800W quick-charge mode, a 600W slow-charge mode, and supports up to 1,000W max solar input. Solar charging time will depend on how many compatible panels are connected and how much direct sun they receive.

For best results, fully charge your generator before an emergency, keep it topped off during storage, and position solar panels in direct sunlight when charging off-grid.

How many times can I charge my phone on the Grid Doctor 65W?

The Grid Doctor 65W Power Bank can charge most phones several times from one full charge. It has a 20,000mAh battery capacity, and the product page lists approximately 4 full charges for an iPhone 15 Plus and 3.5 full charges for a Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Actual charging will depend on your phone model, battery size, battery health, and whether you are charging other devices at the same time. For most households, it is a strong portable backup for keeping phones, tablets, radios, and other small essentials powered during outages, travel, or emergencies.

How do I store each generator?

Store your Grid Doctor generator in a dry, well-ventilated, temperature-controlled area away from water, high humidity, heat sources, and direct sunlight in enclosed spaces like vehicles. Avoid storing the unit fully discharged.

For long-term storage, charge your generator to at least 60% capacity and recharge it every 3 months. Keep ports clean, inspect cables for wear, and use only manufacturer-approved cables and accessories.

The Grid Doctor 300 should be stored between 32°F and 86°F. The Grid Doctor 3300 should be stored between 68°F and 86°F. When your generator arrives, plug it in and charge it before storing so it is ready when you need it.

How can I tell if my size of generator can power something?

Start by checking the wattage of the device or appliance you want to run. You can usually find this on the product label, power cord, user manual, or manufacturer’s website. Then compare it to your Grid Doctor generator’s rated output.

There are two numbers to pay attention to: running watts and starting watts. Running watts are what the item needs to stay on. Starting watts are the extra power some appliances need for a few seconds when they first turn on, especially refrigerators, freezers, pumps, and tools.

A simple rule is this: your generator needs to handle the item’s running watts, and it also needs enough surge power for anything with a motor or compressor. To estimate runtime, compare the generator’s battery capacity to how many watts the item uses. Higher-watt items drain power faster, while smaller devices like phones, lights, radios, and laptops use much less.

For the safest setup, check your device’s wattage before plugging it in and do not exceed your Grid Doctor system’s listed output.
