Experts caution against complacency after slow start to this year’s hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season has been unusually quiet so far, with the season nearly halfway through and no hurricanes formed yet. Experts warn that a slow start does not guarantee a quiet finish, because peak storm season still runs from late August through November. AccuWeather says 2026 has had the slowest start since 2022, a year that still produced seven hurricanes between September and November. Forecasters have lowered this year’s outlook, but they are still watching tropical waves moving off Africa as conditions can change quickly across the Atlantic.

Why This Matters:
A quiet start can make people drop their guard right before hurricane season reaches its most dangerous stretch. Storms do not need a busy season to cause serious damage. One landfall can bring flooding, outages, road closures, supply disruptions, and evacuations. For households, this is the time to check food, water, backup power, flashlights, fuel, and go-bags before a slow season turns into a sudden threat.
