
The U.S. Department of Justice has expanded its beef affordability investigation to eight of the nation’s largest grocery retailers, including Kroger, Costco, Aldi, Walmart, Amazon, Publix, Albertsons, and Ahold Delhaize. The investigation is now looking beyond major meatpackers and into the retail side of the beef supply chain. Federal officials sent letters seeking information about beef pricing, costs, profit margins, and purchasing practices as shoppers continue to face high prices at the meat counter. The move shows that concerns over beef affordability are no longer limited to ranches and processing plants. They now reach all the way to the grocery store shelf.
Why This Matters:
Beef prices are not rising in a vacuum. Drought, shrinking cattle herds, processing concentration, retail pricing, transportation costs, and supply chain pressure can all affect what families pay at the grocery store.
