Nearly 50,000 Lake Tahoe residents could be forced to find a new power source after the utility that supplies most of the region’s electricity said it will stop providing power after May 2027. Liberty Utilities currently gets about 75% of its power from NV Energy, but NV Energy says that supply will end as Northern Nevada faces fast-growing electricity demand from data centers. The Lake Tahoe region now has less than a year to secure replacement power, while residents are already dealing with rising utility costs, wildfire risk, and a complicated energy system split across state and regulatory lines.
