Tropical Depression Nine has formed in the Gulf and is forecast to rapidly strengthen as it moves toward the U.S. Gulf Coast. The National Hurricane Center expects the system to become a tropical storm Wednesday, a hurricane Thursday, and potentially a Category 2 hurricane with winds near 100 mph by Friday night. If named, it will become Isaias, the first Atlantic hurricane of the season. The current forecast brings the storm toward Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle, with impacts possible as early as Friday. Forecasters have also issued a Level 2 flash flood risk for parts of the Southeast as record-warm Gulf waters create favorable conditions for further strengthening.
Why This Matters:
Hurricanes can strengthen quickly, leaving less time to prepare once the threat becomes clear. This system is forecast to go from a tropical depression to a potentially dangerous hurricane in just a few days, with flooding, damaging winds, and power outages all possible along the Gulf Coast. Preparing before conditions deteriorate gives families more time to secure food, water, lighting, communications, and other essentials without competing with last-minute demand. Keeping emergency supplies ready and having backup power available can help households stay prepared if the storm disrupts roads, utilities, or normal services.
