Hurricanes are responsible for many of the longest outages, but ice storms have done it too.
Here are 15 times Americans faced extended power outages—and just how long it took to get the lights back on.

1. 2007 Ice Storm — Eastern Oklahoma
How long: Up to 2 weeks
Cause: Severe freezing rain and ice
One to 2 inches of ice accumulated on trees and power lines across eastern Oklahoma. Nearly 1 million people lost power, and some remained without electricity for up to 2 weeks. [1]
2. Hurricane Wilma — South Florida, 2005
How long: Up to 18 days
Cause: Category 3 hurricane
Wilma knocked out electricity to 3.2 million Florida Power & Light customers. Five days later, half had been restored. FPL's restoration effort took 18 days to get power back across its affected system. [2]

3. Hurricane Ike — Houston Area, Texas, 2008
How long: Up to 18 days
Cause: Category 2 hurricane
Ike knocked out power to 2.15 million CenterPoint customers. Within 2 weeks, more than 2 million had been restored. CenterPoint concluded emergency restoration operations on the 18th day, with only isolated cases remaining. [3]
4. Hurricane Hugo — South Carolina, 1989
How long: 2 to 3 weeks
Cause: Category 4 hurricane
Hugo's winds, debris and falling trees destroyed large portions of the electrical system. About 1.5 million customers lost power, and in many cases electricity wasn't restored for 2 to 3 weeks. [4]
5. Hurricane Rita — Texas and Louisiana, 2005
How long: About 3 weeks
Cause: Category 3 hurricane
Rita left roughly 1.25 million customers without electricity, primarily in Texas and Louisiana. The U.S. Department of Energy reported that power restoration was nearly complete about 3 weeks after landfall. [5]

6. 2009 Ice Storm — Western Kentucky
How long: 3 weeks or longer
Cause: Severe freezing rain and ice
The storm caused unprecedented damage to western Kentucky's utility infrastructure. Thousands of poles went down, and several thousand rural customers were still without power 3 weeks after the storm. [6]
7. Hurricane Fiona — Puerto Rico, 2022
How long: Up to 4 weeks
Cause: Category 1 hurricane
Fiona triggered an island-wide blackout in Puerto Rico. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that residents in some parts of the territory remained without electricity for as long as 4 weeks. [7]
8. 1994 Ice Storm — Mississippi
How long: Up to one month
Cause: Severe freezing rain and ice
Northern Mississippi was devastated by ice accumulations reaching several inches. About 750,000 customers lost power, and NOAA reported that electricity wasn't restored to some locations for one month. [8]

9. Hurricane Iniki — Kauai, Hawaii, 1992
How long: More than 4 weeks for many residents
Cause: Category 4 hurricane
Iniki knocked out electricity across Kauai and heavily damaged the island's utility system. 4 weeks after the hurricane, only about 20% of the island's power had been restored. [9]
10. Hurricane Andrew — South Florida, 1992
How long: Over a month in the hardest-hit areas
Cause: Category 5 hurricane
Andrew devastated South Florida's electrical system. Florida Power & Light later reported that some customers remained without electricity for up to 5 weeks after the storm. [10]
11. Hurricane Michael — Florida Panhandle, 2018
How long: Several weeks
Cause: Category 5 hurricane
Michael's catastrophic winds caused widespread damage to the electrical system. Nearly 100% of customers across a large portion of the Florida Panhandle lost power, and the National Weather Service reports that some outages lasted for weeks. [11]
12. Hurricane Laura — Southwest Louisiana, 2020
How long: Up to 35 days
Cause: Category 4 hurricane
Laura caused catastrophic damage to southwest Louisiana's electric grid. More than 900,000 Entergy customers lost power, and some remained without electricity for as long as 35 days while crews rebuilt damaged infrastructure. [12]
13. Hurricane Frederic — Mobile County, Alabama, 1979
How long: Up to 5 weeks
Cause: Category 4 hurricane
Frederic's winds toppled trees and brought down thousands of power lines across coastal Alabama. The National Weather Service reports that some areas of Mobile County remained without electricity for 5 weeks. [13]

14. Hurricanes Irma and Maria — U.S. Virgin Islands, 2017
How long: About 5 months
Cause: Two Category 5 hurricanes
Irma and Maria heavily damaged the U.S. Virgin Islands' electrical system. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, it took roughly 5 months to restore power to all customers whose structures were safe to receive it. [14]
15. Hurricanes Irma and Maria — Puerto Rico, 2017
How long: Roughly 11 months
Cause: Hurricanes Irma and Maria
The hurricanes devastated Puerto Rico's electrical grid, with Maria leaving all 3.3 million residents without power. Restoring electricity to all customers whose structures were considered safe for restoration took roughly 11 months—the longest blackout in U.S. history. [15]
