Planting Instructions

Cabbage is a cool-season crop that benefits from an early start and steady conditions:

  • Indoor Start: Begin seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost
  • Planting Depth: Sow seeds 1/4–1/2 inch deep
  • Initial Spacing: Plant seeds about 3 inches apart
  • Transplanting: Move outdoors when plants are 4–6 weeks old
  • Final Spacing: Space plants 12–24 inches apart in rows spaced 18–34 inches apart
  • Sunlight: Full sun required for best head development
  • Soil Conditions: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil
  • Temperature: Performs best in cooler weather

Harvesting Instructions

Timing is important to ensure firm heads and avoid splitting:

  • Time to Harvest: Approximately 65 days from transplanting
  • Head Formation: Harvest once heads are firm and fully formed
  • Harvest Method: Cut at the base of the plant with a sharp knife
  • Timing Tip: Harvest promptly, as mature heads may split in changing conditions

Saving Seeds

Saving seeds from cabbage requires a two-year growing cycle, as it is a biennial crop.

Select strong, healthy plants and allow them to overwinter or replant them the following season. In the second year, plants will produce flowering stalks and seed pods.

Allow seeds to fully mature and dry on the plant before harvesting. To maintain seed quality, isolate from other brassica crops such as broccoli or cauliflower.
