Star Meat Delivery recalls 167,639 pounds of meat over false USDA inspection label

More than 167,000 pounds of raw pork, beef, and goat products are being recalled after federal officials determined they were produced without required USDA inspection. The products, processed by North Carolina-based Star Meat Delivery, carried a USDA inspection mark with establishment number “EST. 1363,” even though the facility did not have a federal grant of inspection. The meat was distributed under the A&D Foods label to restaurants and retailers nationwide, and some consumer packages may carry store labels instead of the original packaging. USDA officials warn that uninspected products could contain harmful bacteria, undeclared allergens, or other contaminants.

Why This Matters:
Federal inspection is one of the safeguards consumers rely on to know meat entering the food supply has met basic safety requirements. In this case, more than 167,000 pounds moved into restaurants and stores nationwide without that inspection, and some shoppers may not even see the original label on products in their refrigerator or freezer. It shows how problems earlier in the supply chain can be difficult for consumers to identify once food reaches the store. Keeping a dependable supply of emergency food storage at home gives families more options when recalls or other food-supply disruptions suddenly take products off the shelf.
