In a world full of drones, sensors, and smart tractors, it’s easy to believe our food supply is secure.
But we’ve seen empty grocery shelves in just the past few years.
One flood. One fungus. One drought. That’s all it takes to send the supply chain into a tailspin.
And it’s nothing new.
Our ancestors lived through brutal crop failures without tech, but, even today, with all our advancements, we’re still just one bad season away from shortages.
Modern food systems are efficient, but they’re not as resilient as we might think.
We’ve built a global food network so connected—and so dependent on technology—that one disruption can ripple across continents.
AI now predicts planting, robots pick crops, and sensors track soil.
But when systems crash, when hackers strike, or when weather hits harder than our algorithms expect, the parts of or the entire supply chain can stall.
We saw it during the pandemic: Ships stuck at ports, store shelves empty, and families scrambling for basics.
The same weakness still exists.
And then there’s Mother Nature who always gets a vote.
And when she does or something goes terribly wrong with our crops, it reminds us that every generation faces the same question: What happens when the food stops coming?
That’s why we look back…because the past has the answers.
1930s: When the Soil Turned against Us

You’ve seen the pictures: black skies, cracked dirt, starving families.
The Dust Bowl wasn’t just a drought. It was a man-made disaster.
By the early 20th century, farmers in the Southern Plains were tearing up millions of acres of native prairie grass to make room for wheat.
Mechanized plows made it easy. And between 1925 and 1930, more than 5 million acres (2 million hectares) of previously unfarmed land was plowed.
The soil seemed endless.
Until it wasn’t.
When the Great Depression hit, wheat prices crashed.
Desperate to stay afloat, farmers planted even more…ripping up more land, overworking the soil, and leaving fallow fields exposed.
At the same time, a drought settled in.
With no roots to hold the soil and no rain to weigh it down, the Great Plains began to blow away.
By 1932, giant dust storms (nicknamed “black blizzards”) were sweeping across the heartland.
By 1934, more than 35 million acres of farmland were destroyed, and over 100 million acres lost their topsoil entirely.
This wasn’t just an agricultural disaster. It was an ecological and human one.
Millions were forced to flee their land. Others stayed and struggled to survive in homes choked with dust. Some wore masks just to breathe indoors.
Families couldn’t grow food, sell crops, or even afford groceries.
And none of it turned around until the rains returned years later.
What it teaches us today: Even the richest land on earth can be ruined in a generation.
Farming without conservation leads to collapse. And once the soil is gone…it’s gone.

1970: The Blight That Blindsided America

In the late 1960s, corn yields were booming across the United States.
Farmers had switched to high-efficiency hybrids, and thanks to new technology, specifically a genetic tweak called Texas male sterile cytoplasm, seed companies could mass-produce hybrid corn without the backbreaking job of detasseling.
In 1970, a new race of fungus called Cochliobolus heterostrophus (then known as Helminthosporium maydis) swept across the nation.
This strain, nicknamed Race T, produced a toxin that targeted the very genetic shortcut farmers had adopted to save labor.
By harvest season, nearly 700 million bushels of corn were gone—roughly 15–16% of the entire US crop, translating to over $1 billion in losses (that’s about $8 billion in today’s dollars).
The blight spread from Florida to Minnesota, destroying fields that had looked healthy just weeks before.
Farmers watched entire harvests rot from the leaves down.
What it teaches us today: Relying on one seed, one system, or one supply chain is a recipe for disaster. True preparedness means diversity in crops, in seeds, and in strategy.

1993: When the Heartland Went Underwater

From late spring through August 1993, storm after storm parked itself over the Midwest.
Rivers swelled into inland seas. Levees broke. Towns flooded with brown water.
Nine states were hit hard, with 505 counties declared disaster areas. It was an unprecedented footprint across the Mississippi–Missouri basin (Iowa, Illinois, Missouri most severe).
48 lives lost and 74,000 displaced. Tens of thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed.
Nearly 9 million acres of crops (mostly corn and soybeans) were drowned or never planted.
Yields dropped across the board: Corn down nearly 30%, soybeans about 20% lower than the year before.
Billions of dollars vanished with the fields.
But it wasn’t just farms that went under.
When the levees failed, the country’s food supply chain came to a halt.
Barges stopped moving, stranding grain shipments from Iowa to Missouri.
Rail lines and bridges were washed out.
Thousands of barges sat idle for weeks. Supermarkets from the Midwest to the coasts felt the pinch as transport delays stacked up.
Even after the skies cleared, the ground stayed soaked.
Fields were buried in silt and sand. Equipment rusted where it stood.
Some farms didn’t recover for years.
What it teaches us today: One wet summer can do what a drought can’t…wipe out harvests, break supply chains, and raise prices overnight.
The 1993 Midwest Flood proved how tightly connected our food system really is.
When the rivers rise, grocery shelves can fall fast.
That’s why preparedness means more than keeping a few cans in the pantry.

2012: When the Rain Stopped Coming

In 2012, fields were planted early. Farmers planted fast. Corn broke records for how quickly it went into the ground.
Then came the heat.
By late spring, the rain stopped.
What started as mild dryness in May turned into a full-blown crisis by July.
The Midwest baked under relentless sun, and the soil ran out of soil moisture.
By midsummer, nearly two-thirds of the entire United States was in drought—the largest area since the 1950s.
July 2012 became the second-hottest month in US history at the time, just behind the Dust Bowl year of 1936.
Crops withered in the fields.
The US lost about 4 billion bushels of corn, nearly a quarter of the nation’s supply.
Yields plunged from 166 bushels per acre to just 123—a 26% drop.
Soybeans and sorghum took hits too, losing up to 9% and 25% of yields respectively.
Livestock producers suffered next.
Three out of four cattle in America grazed on drought-stricken land, and two-thirds of hay acreage dried out.
Ranchers had no choice but to sell off herds or import feed a at high cost.
In states like Indiana and Illinois, the combination of early planting, record-breaking March heat, and no spring rain created the worst growing conditions since 1988.
Burn bans spread, rivers dropped, and small lakes turned toxic with blue-green algae.
When the year finally ended, the US had lost more than $30 billion to drought damage.
What it teaches us today: The 2012 drought showed how fast normal can disappear.
Even with satellites, forecasts, and irrigation systems, you can’t farm or raise cattle without water.
That’s why preparedness starts before the crisis.
It means storing what you can’t grow, and saving seeds that still thrive when the weather turns against you.
